A local burger shop, now on both sides of the metro

Hand-pattied, grilled to order

Every burger starts as fresh beef pattied by hand that morning. It goes on the grill when you order, not before, and comes out in a red checkered basket with whatever you add: fries, tater tots, onion rings, sweet potato fries or mac n cheese.

The menu runs from the Classic Cheeseburger to the ones people talk about: the Egg Burger with bacon, the Hawaiian Burger with pineapple, ham and pina colada sauce, the Bacon PB, the Pizza Burger and the Diablo Burger, which stacks jalapenos, habanero sauce and pepper flakes. There is an Iowa pork tenderloin, crispy and blackened chicken sandwiches, tenders, wraps, salads and a kids menu at both shops.

Clive first

The original Burger Shop held its grand opening on February 18, 2023 at 1255 NW 128th St, Suite 100 in Clive: booths inside, an open kitchen you can watch from the counter, and a patio out front. By the end of the year, Yelp's ranking of reviews that mentioncheeseburgers put it at the top in Iowa. Clive still has the longer menu, with milkshakes, Phillys, Reubens and a burger of the month.

Then Altoona

In April 2025, the Outlets of Des Moines welcomed Burger Shop into Suite 670 of its food court in Altoona, across from Bass Pro Shops. Same burgers, same baskets, a second kitchen for the east side of the metro, open from 10 AM most days.

The two shops run their own kitchens, phones, hours and online ordering, and their prices differ a little. The locations page puts them side by side.
